Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary's at Westow. The immediate impression is that the tower and main part of the church do not match. The darker sandstone tower is largely 14thC, whilst the rest dates from the 1860's."

Bulmer's directory of 1892 reports a circular Norman font in this church. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. The Parish web site [http://westow.org/SaintMarys.aspx] [accessed 6 November 2010] notes: "The age of the first church is unknown. The first vicar was appointed in 1304 [...] the Piscina in the chancel and the Font are Norman." The British Listed Buildings dabase [http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-328814-church-of-saint-mary-westow] [accessed 6 November 2010] reports a "Norman tub font with cable moulding" inside this church. The entry for this church in the CRSBI [https://www.crsbi.ac.uk/view-item?i=2871] [accessed 17 February 2025] informs: "The font is an irregular cylinder, mostly tapering upwards. Just below the rim is a heavy cable pattern. It is mounted on a slightly wider modern cylindrical double plinth, of which larger, bottom circle acts as a step [...] The font sembles a little the font at Folkton but that is very much retooled, and the cable is neither so bold nor used so well as here. The fonts with cable pattern as their main ornamentation tend to be located in the western Wolds, so perhaps owing something to Kirkham Priory (Wood 2011, 145-6, fig. 28)."
