view of font and cover

Scene Description: notice the large damage area to the upper rim, probably caused by a metal staple splitting the stone; the large patch on the left side of the underbowl may be a repair of damage there as well.

Font Notes:
There is an entry for Catton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE3778/catton/], but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Sheahan & Whellan (1857) report a 'circular' font in this church. Glynne's 21 November 1860 entry for CATTON, All Saints' (in Butler, 2007) notes: "The font is Early English, the bowl a circular bowl, upon a stem". Entry in Bulmer's Directory of 1892: "The font is circular, and old". Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period [NB: but Cox & Harvey (ibid.) list an Early English font in the church at Catton, North Riding]. English Heritage [Listing NGR: SE7047853990] (1967) notes: "Church. C12 origins; C13 north and south aisles, C15 south-west tower, chancel 1866 by G E Street [...] C13 goblet-shaped font." In Pevsner and Neave (1995): ''Font. Low, of squat goblet form; C13." [NB: unclear whether or not the other Catton reported in Cox & Harvey (1907) with an Early English font is the same or a different church]. [NB: the Office of National Statistics gives a single entry for CATTON CP (Parish) [http://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk] [accessed 29 October 2008]; a civil parish in the East Riding that includes two villages: High Catton and Low Catton]
