There are two entries for this Kilnwick in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE9949/kilnwick/] [accessed 17 February 2025], neither of which reports priest or church in it. A font here is noted in Bulmer's History and Directory of East Yorkshire (1892): "The font, circular and ancient, stands on a modern octagonal base." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Transitional period [1150-1200]. The early basin has a protruding upper shallow circular volume followed by a narrower octagonal one, but, as a look inside the inner well shows, it is actually of regular depth internally; the shallow outer side is decorated with a rope moulding at the upper rim, while a groove lower on the side makes up a thin moulding on the lower end;the inner well of the basin is lead-lined and has a central drain-hole; the rest of the outer side of the upper block is narrower and octagonal in shape, totally plain; as indicated in Bulmer above, a modern [Victorian?] squat base and plinth were added a t a later date [ca. 1871?]. There are visible repairs and/or restoration to the basin, which are quite obvious on the upper rim and sides. The flat round wooden cover is decorated with metal and is patterned with spikes to prevent from being sitted on [is it Victorian?].
