view of basin - interior
Scene Description: this image shows best the extent of damage to the basin upper side; the missing stone right and left here is probably where the original staples of the old cover were; the top and bottom plugs were probably added later and they are still in place

There is an entry for Filey [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TA1181/filey/] [accessed 16 September 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The detailed study of Filey and its church by Arthur Neville Cooper (1886) mentions neither font nor baptism in this church. The Catalogue of the manuscript maps, charts and plans, and of the topographical drawings in the British Museum (London, 1844), vol. 2:314, lists an entry for a "Sketch, in pen and ink, of the circular stone font in Filey Church; drawn by the Rev. Thomas Kerrich: 6 in. x 4. in [Add. 6756. fol. 238.]" Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Transitional period [1150-1200] here. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TA1177581068] reports "a C13 plain bowl font on a cylindrical shaft" in it.
