Parker (1855) notes: "The font is very good E[arly] E[nglish], octagonal, on a central stem, with eight detached shafts; the basin is covered with stiff-leaf foliage, with the tooth ornament under it." Described and illustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. Described and illustrated in Cautley (1938) and (1982) as a baptismal font of the 13th century, "by far the most beautiful example of this period in the county --possibly in the country". The octagonal basin is mounted on a central polygonal pillar and eight rounded outer colonnettes that stem from the arches of the basin side; these colonnettes have capitals and bases ornamented with roll mouldings; the basin side has foliage motif ornamentation around the sides of the pointed arches; the inside of the arches on the lower basin side are ornamented with dog-tooth motif; the outer colonnettes of the base appear to be of two widths, alternating thicker and thinner. The whole is raised on a circular plinth. The wooden cover is modern, a stylised gilded octagonal pyramid with a dove finial.
