Described in Parker (1855): "The font is N[orman], with a representation of the serpent beguiling Eve". Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. The Herringswell Parish Council website [http://www.onesuffolk.co.uk/HerringswellPC/Church/] [accessed 5 November 2009] informs : "The font was probably of a much earlier date, possibly Norman. Its cylindrical bowl, which sprang from a fluted column, was carved with a representation of Adam and Eve in Paradise with Tree of Life and the Serpent in relief. This was destroyed by fire in 1869." The present font, octagonal and decorated with mouldings, is probably the replacement from the reconstruction of the church soon after the fire.
