An engraving of the font at Halesworth St. Mary's appears in Suckling (1846-1848). Noted and illustrated in Parker (1855). Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one of several octagonal mounted fonts of the 15th century, similar in general form to the ones belonging to the Seven-sacrament group; these, however, have different ornamentation: the sides of the basin have angels or other figures holding shields alternating with Tudor roses, the symbols of the Evangelists and other motifs; the chamfer of the underbowl is usually adorned with cherubs whose wings span to cover the spaces between the heads; the pedestal of the base is usually adorned with sedente lions, and standing figures, the latter usually "wild men" with clubs. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) simply as a good example of 15th cent. font.
