There is an entry for this Stapleford in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK4837/stapleford/] [accessed 22 June 2016]; it mentions a priest and a church in it. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) and in Guilford (1927) as a baptismal font of the Decorated period. Cox (1912) writes: "Circular font c. 1300; domed cover, with wooden knob, is of metal, most unusual, apparently of 1660 period." The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: SK4885637362] (1949) reports: "Fittings include font c.1300, re-sited 1976, tapered base and stem, irregular moulded conical bowl. Unusual spun copper cover with turned knob, late C17." Pevsner & Williamson (1979) note the font cover only: "Iron with a wooden knob; second half of the C17". The irregular round basin has mouldings at top and bottom; the pedestal base and lower base are a later replacement. The copper [cf. supra] font cover is of a dome shape, not a common design seen on English fonts, with a turned wooden handle-finial atop. A B&W photograph [1877?] made available by the Southwell & Nottingham Church History Project shows the font and cover located at the west end of the nave, beneath the western gallery; the church was restored and the interior re-organised several times; in a photograph taken ca. 2009, also made available in the Southwell & Nottingham Church History Project, the font appears located at the east end of the south aisle.
