No individual entry for this Wellow found in the Domesday survey. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Norman period here. Cox (1912) mentions a new font in this church, as well as "Under tower curious Norm, font bowl, circular in front, but squared at back to stand against wall." [NB: perhaps a font re-cut to fit the space?]. Guilford (1927) notes "a disused font of unusual shape" of the Norman period inside this church. In Pevsner & Williamson (1979): "Norman, on an odd plan, rectangular, with a semicircular projection in the middle of one side." Described in the Wellow Village Web Site [http://www.maypolecottage.demon.co.uk/church.html] [accessed 8 April 2008]: "An interesting connection with Norman times is the font bowl under the west window. It is round at the front and square at the back as it was originally made to stand against a wall. This font is no longer used as all baptisms take place in the one which was added in later centuries." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SK6707466100], however, does not mention the old font: "Parish church. C12, C13, C14, C15, restored 1878 by Ewan Christian and 1968. [...] Fittings include panelled octagonal ashlar font and pulpit, C19." The Southwell & Nottingham Church History Project entry for this church [http://southwellchurches.nottingham.ac.uk/wellow/hfitting.php] [accessed 30 April 2019] notes: "The font and pulpit are 19th century stonework, of Caen stone, supplied by Cox of London. [...] The Victorian font is octagonal with a star of David in the panel facing the porch entrance. [...] Under the west window is a Norman font bowl, round at the front and square at the back (as it was originally made to stand against a wall.) This font is no longer used as all baptisms take place in the 19th century font."
