Font Notes:
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Cox (1912) notes two fonts: "a substantial Norm[an] font of cylinder shape, standing in the porch", and "A 1662 font, of fair proportions, discarded recently in favour of modern successor, has obtained shelter at East Bridgford" [cf. Index entry for East Bridgford]. Listed in Guilford (1927) as a Norman font in the porch. Described in Pevsner & Williamson (1979): "Tub on a new base: the cover looks Jacobean." The local Church Guide (May 1980) [http://www.lhi.org.uk/docs/Guide_to_the_Parish_Church.pdf] [accessed 1 October 2009] notes: "Since 1920 the south west corner of the church has been used as the baptistery, instead of the former position, under the tower. The Norman bowl of the font is older than the church. It was previously used in the earlier church of St. James […] In about 1663 a new font was put into the church. This font was a replica of one in Southwell Minster […] This 1663 font was given to East Bridgford in 1863. The next font was a 19th century design, and was eventually given to a new church, All Saints at New Clipstone, when the Norman font was brought back into use and placed in the new baptistry […] For a time it had been used as a bird bath in the graounds of the old rectory, and later it lay in the south porch of the church". The Guide (ibid.) continues to report that the font was restored in 1922 at the cost of £80, it was re-tooled, given a new lead lining, a stone pedestal and an oak cover, being finally "dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Derby on 31st October, 1926".
