The Penny Magazine [transcribed in www.oldtowns.co.uk/Northamptonshire/highamferrers.htm] reported ca. 1839 the presence of "an ancient font" in this collegiate church. Illustrated in a June 1840 drawing by Henry E.L. Dryden, now in the Sir Henry Dryden Collection, Northamptonshire NB: noted "from W.C. Lukis"]. Described and illustrated in Parker (1849) as Early English. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font of the Norman period, or, at least, with Norman-like ornamentation, including crosses. The Victoria County History (Northampton, vol. 3, 1930) notes: "It may be assumed that there was a church here in 1086, when there was a priest in the manor of William Peverel. [...] No part of the church is earlier than the 13th century, but a considerable portion of the building erected in that period still remains, though altered in the following century and later. [...] The 15thcentury font has an octagonal bowl with carving on the four major faces, on attached shafts with moulded bases, and chamfered plinth." In Mee (1945): "The font is 15th century." In Pevsner & Cherry (1973): "Octagonal, C13. On one side a cross with stiff-leaf, on three others short gables with fleurs-de-lis etc., also nailhead." The Parish' own web site [www.stmaryhighamferrers.org] notes: "Founded in the 13th century, at the time when Higham Ferrers was given a Charter by King Henry III, the Church still retains its original font". The font consists of an octagonal basin some of the sides of which are decorated with large Maltese crosses, one side with a niche-like motif; raised on a central shaft clustered with four outer colonnettes, an octagonal lower base, and a two-step plinth: the upper step octagonal, the lower step square. The tall pyramidal font cover appears to consist of an internal structure [wood?] and a very stylised [cloth?] lining on it [NB: a second cover, octagonal and flat appears on the font in the archival photographs shown]. [cf. Index entry for Higham Ferrers No. 2 for a holy water stoup listed for this church].
