There is an entry for Yaxham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG0010/yaxham/] [accessed 31 March 2014] but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Yaxham is dedicated to St. Peter [...] The Church has a nave, north and south isle, covered with lead, and a chancel tiled; at the west end of the nave is a round tower, with 5 bells. [...] In the first year of King John, William Earl Warren, granted by fine, the advowson to Ralph de Curzun." The above would put the date of the church here between 1086 and 1199. The present font is described in Cotman (1838) as an ornate, highly gothic baptismal font [NB: an engraving of this font by Cotman, date 1817 in the source, appeared for sale on GoAntiques [www.goantiques.com/detail,font-yaxham-church,1814033.html] [accessed 13 September 2009]]. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908): Yaxham and its sister font, Cromer, are fine examples of octagonal 15th-cent. fonts with delicate carving, even canopied over the pedestal; the pedestal has tiers of floral ornament and a narrow base; the substantial plinth is tall and has pairs of quatrefoils inscribed in circles on the sides. Illustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928). Described and illustrated in Cautley (1949) as "the loveliest example" of 14th-century font "which has been copied at Cromer". Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999). Noted and illustrated in Knott (2006). The lower end of the basin angle buttresses ends in a shield carved at an angle that is almost horizontal, parallel with the ground. [NB: we have no information on the font of the 12th-century (?) church here].
