Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "On the font are four shields; on the first, the emblem of the trinity; on the second, three cups, on each a wafer, as an emblem of the sacrament; on the third, a plain cross; on the fourth, a cross floree, the arms (I suppose) of the donor." The entry in Chambers (1829) is identical and appears to have been taken verbatim from Blomefield. White's Directory of 1845 notes: "a very ancient font, in fine preservation, decorated with figures of the twelve apostles" [cf. infra]. Listed in Cox-Harvey (1907) as a stone baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "C15. Eight small figures against the stem, two flowers, two lions and four demi-figures of angels with shields against the bowl." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2005), with reference to Arthur Mee (1940): "Arthur Mee, in his 1940 King's England, claims that on the stem, with three mitred Bishops, there is, and I quote, "a man in a bowler hat". The underbowl has the usual angel heads at the angles and floral motives on the sides below [NB: although in other respects this is font of the East Anglia type, there are a couple of major variations from the standard model: there are figures on the sides of the stem instead of lions, with buttresses between, and there are also eight of each instead of four].
