Font Notes:
No entry found for Needham in the Domesday survey. Cox-Harvey (1907) list a stone baptismal font of the Perpendicular period here. Knott (2005) notes: "The 15th century font is the same as the one nearby at Starston, with lions supporting a bowl with shields and symbols." There are the four Evangelists' symbols on alternate side of the basin, the other four sides with very well executed Tudor roses; the heads of the Evangelists' symbols are defaced; the frames of both these and the Tudor roses are decorated in little square flowers. The underbowl chamfer has cherub heads at the angles and square flowers on the sides below; between the four damaged lions of the base are buttresses, as usual in this design; the plinth is octagonal and appears to be the original. The wooden font cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; probably 19th-century.
