There are two entries for Blofield [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TG3309/blofield/] [accessed 14 October 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "In Domesday Book the town is wrote Blafelda [...] The Church is a rectory dedicated to St. Andrew [...] John Terri occurs rector about 1235." The present font is described and illustrated in Cautley (1949) as "the most interesting" of the late-14th century fonts in England, "which is unique as having scenes from the life of Our Lord. Starting west [clock-wise]:the Ascension, twelve apostles looking up to clouds, the Nativity with Virgin and Child in a bed, having Joseph at the foot of it and two oxen eating from a hay rack, the flight into Egypt, Joseph carrying a bundle and leading the ass, Ecce Homo (?), the Scourging, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection." [NB: Cautley's identification of the "two oxen" is questionable; one of the supposed oxen totally desfigured, the other, damaged; the animals would have likely been an ox and a mule or an ass]. Described and illustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928); his description of the scenes was probably used by Cautley but the latter left out "the Mocking". Pevsner & Wilson (1997) make a comment about this font having "oddly enough all scenes from the Life of Christ, a cycle not in general connected with fonts: Nativity, Flight into Egypt, etc., to the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. It looks C15." [NB: the authors were obviously not acquainted with the medieval fonts that have representations of the life of Christ] The upper rim of the basin shows a crocket-like pattern with rosettes below, all worn or damaged; the chamfer of the underbowl has human heads (damaged) at the angles and shields on the the sides. The octagonal pedestal of the base has Ogee widows with inner cinquefoil shape; below it, a band of large flowers (some Tudor rose, some square flowers), one on each side. Short moulded lower base and low plain plinth, both octagonal. The carving has been damaged but the scenes are still legible. The wooden cover consists of an octagonal base with Baroque scrolling ribs on top. Described and illustrated in Knott (2007).
