There are three entries in the Domesday survey for Calthorpe [variant spellings] [https://opendomesday.org/place/TG1831/calthorpe/] [accessed 18 February 2024], one of which, in the lordship of the abbey of St Benet of Holme in both 1066 and 1086, mentions a church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "Calthorp [...] being wrote Calethorp in the Book of Doomsday; the chief lordship belonged to Edric, a Dane, who gave it to the abbey of St. Bennet of Holm, [...] and confirmed by King Edward the Confessor. At the survey [i.e., 1086] the abbot had [...] a church without any land or glebe [...] The Church of Calthorp is dedicated to the Virgin or St. Margaret, and consists of a nave, or body, with a south porch covered with lead, and a chancel with tiles, also a square with 3 bells." The present font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. Octagonal. At the corners of the stem four lions; against the underside of the bowl demi-figures of angels; against the bowl tracery." Knott (2005) described it as a "deliciously green font, with a towering 20th century font cover, typical of the style in red and green". The Historic Churches Preservation Trust notes: "Font 15th century with amiable lions at its base [...] Ancient pews restored 1938 when painted cover was made for font" [source: 'Recent Grants' issue of the Grants Cttee. Meeting of 13 September 2005, www.historicchurches.org.uk]. The web site of the Church of England, 'A Church Near You' [http://achurchnearyou.com] notes that the "decorative font cover originates from Buxton church". [NB: we have no information on the font from the original church here].
