Font Notes:
There are two entries for [Cherry] Burton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE9941/cherry-burton/] [accessed 16 September 2018] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The second volume of Sheahan & Whellan's History and Topography of the city of York; the Ainsty wapentake and the East Riding of Yorkshire [...] (1856) mentions the "recently rebuilt" church, but gives no information whatsoever on the previous building. The Comprehensive Gazetteer of England & Wales (1894-1895) reports "a beautiful font" in this church. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE9929141964] notes: "Font: circular tub on octagonal pier with moulded base." The present font consists of a plain cylindrical stone with an octagonal underbowl, raised on an octagonal pedestal base with a roll moulding atop, and a moulded lower base, also octagonal. Modern cover. The present font looks modern, and appears to be either composite or partly re-used; the staples in the upper rim of the basin indicated it had an older cover secured to it. [NB: a church is said to have existed here in pre-Conquest times, but we have no information on it or its font].
