Font Notes:
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "There is no mention made of this town in the grand survey, it being a part and member of the Bishop of Norwich's great lordship of Blofield [...] William de Lingwood was patron of the church, and lord, in 1349 [...] 1310, John de Tyrington instituted rector, presented by William de Lyngewood." The present font is listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Pevsner & Wilson (1997) write: "Plain undatable octagonal bowl, with eight C19 shafts against the central stem." Described and illustrated with similar doubts in Knott (2005): "a Victorian rehash of a 14th century-style (or is it real?) plain octagonal bowl set like a Norman font on an array of pillars." The plain basin appears re-cut or drastically re-tooled; the base is definitely modern.
