Church Notes: name of village is pronounced 'Inglethorpe'
There are two entries for Ingoldisthorpe [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF6932/ingoldisthorpe/] [accessed 7 April 2014], but neither mentions a church or cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Michael, has a nave, a north and south isle, and a chancel covered with lead, and at the west end a square tower, with 3 bells, and directly before the south porch, at about 15 feet distance, stands a stone cross It is a rectory", and the first recorded rector is named "Andrew de Baskervyle, presented by Sir Robert de Walkefare, Knt.", in 1327. Earlier rectors of this church is, however, are noted in Blomefield (ibid.): "n 1275, there was an agreement between the prior of Binham, and Sir Edm. de Munpinzun, rector of this church, with the assent of Sir Jn. de Munpinzun, patron, and confirmed by the Bishop of Norwich, about the tithes of the demeans of the said Sir John, and of lands formerly Sir John de Breton's, that the rector should have the said tithe to him and his successours, paying 4 marks per ann. for the same to the prior and convent, under the penalty of 40s. Before this, there was an agreement in the time of Bishop Raleigh, between the then prior, and Hugh de Ardern, rector, that the tithes aforesaid should belong to the prior." If this "Hugh of Ardern" was rector of the church at Ingoldisthorpe and had dealings with Raleigh [aka Raley, Ralegh, who became bishop of Norwich in 1239 and died in 1250], it means there was a church here at the time, and probably earlier, which would account for the late-Norman font here. The present font is described and illustrated in Bond (1908): originally a Norman square bowl, its four sides were covered with different motifs; at some later date it was truncated into an octagon, slicing right through the interlacing, as it is known to have happened at Chelvy, Somerset, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, and Warnham All Saints, Norfolk. Noted and illustrated in Knott (2006): "the font is a curiosity - it was once a square Norman font, but somebody, probably in the 13th century, thought that it would look better octagonal. It doesn't, I think, but that is what we are left with." On-site notes: the original square basin was recut into an octagon and is now mounted on an octagonal pedestal and raised on a wide octagonal plinth, probably in imitation of the common style of font design that became popular in England in later centuries. The sides of the basin show: 1) East: interlace of linked circles; 2) North: large vegetal motif; 3) West: blind arcade of round arches on columns with capitals and bases; 4) South: reticular pattern. Braided pattern appears above and below the central motifs. The west side of the basin has a large repair insert at the upper end. The basin well is lead lined and has a central drain hole. Only the basin is original, though re-cut; the base and plinth are of a later date. The flat octagonal cover is modern
