There is an entry for Drayton [variant spelling] in the Domeday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG1813/drayton/\ [accessed 10 April 2014] and it reports a church and church lands in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes; "The Church is a rectory, dedicated to St. Margaret, and a single pile, covered with lead, a chancel covered with tile; at the west end a square tower with 3 bells." The present font is described and illustrated with an engraving by J. Basire in Repton (1812) as a smal font of the Norman period [NB: Repton uses English monarchy chronology and gives the time period between the Conquest and the reign of Henry II]; Basire's engraving shows a font that appears monolithic, consisting of an octagonal basin with plain vertical sides, raised on a broad and plain square shaft with decorated angle colonnetes attached, and a plain square lower base; one of the upper angles of the basin appears damaged. Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. Octagonal, on two halved Norman colonnettes and a centre support beneath a plain bowl." The plain octagonal basin is damaged and appears to have been re-tooled; the halved colonnettes are reinforced with modern halfs behind, and the central shaft appears moder as well; quadrangular lower base (two steps, or base and plinth). The wooden cover is octagonal and flat but has a slight overlap; appears modern.
