There are ten entries for Norwich [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TG2308/norwich/] [accessed 13 October 2020], one of which records "22.7 churches. 2.57 church lands" in it; a separate entry records a priest and a church in it. Described and illustrated in Paley (1844) as an octagonal mounted font of the 14th century in the Decorated style; each side of the basin contains two figures, identified by Paley as "the Twelve Apostles, St. Paul, St. John the Baptist, St. Michael the Archangel, and St. George". This font is of a design quite similar to those at St. James' and at St. Benedict's, both in Norwich, as well as to other such fonts in Norfolk: Apostles and/or saints in pairs in the panels of the basin; the slightly concave curve of the underbowl decorated with foliage and floral motifs and including intersecting prolongations of the arches of the stem; the stem of the base has eight niches, each of which containins a human figure raised on a short pedestal, usually saints, at least one of which is a cleric, while another is identified by Paley as St. Lawrence; the lower base is also octagonal and decorated with a few mouldings. The tall plinth is octagonal with two angular mouldings, one at top, the other at bottom, and there is priest's or kneeling stone on the west side. Illustrated in an undated etching between 1800-1865 by Sir William Jackson Hooker, now in the British Museum [ref.: 1871,0610.595 -- PPA329721]. Harvey & Cox (1907) describe the font as a noteworthy example of octagonal Decorated font in a sumptuous design with eight saints on the pedestal and two on each of the eight faces of the bowl, but do not identify the figures. Nor does Bond (1908: 249). Paley (ibid.) adds that the font at Norwich St. James' is "similar in design and apparently by the same hand, but much mutilated". The font cover illustrated in our 1937 photograph by George Plunkett appears flat and plain, modern, but it is not clear whether or not this is the same cover referred to in Paley's description of ca. 1844: "Inelegant wooden cover of late character". [We are grateful to Jonathan Plunkett for the photograph of this font, taken by his father, George Plunkett, in 1937] [NB: another font from this church is said to be the present one in Norwich St. Julian's -- cf. Index entry for Norwich No. 17]
