There is entry for [Great] Snorin [variant spellin] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF9434/great-snoring/] [accessed 12 December 2013] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) notes "The Church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and is a rectory [...] William de Calthorp was rector about the reign of Edward I" [i.e., 1272-1307], and gives no reference to an earlier date for the church here. Cox (1907) describes this font as a noteworthy example of Early English font of Purbeck marble. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a square basin mounted on a central shaft and four outer colonnettes of the Norman period. Noted in Pevsner & Wislon (1997): "Of greyish Purbeck marble. Square, with tapering sides, on five supports. C13 (?)". Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble: "bowl plain and cracked" [source given: H. Munro Cautley, Norfolk Churches, 1949]. [On-site notes: square basin mounted on a broad cylindrical column with four corner shafts, and a moulded lower base, all original; the upper volume of the plinth appears modern, whereas the lower volume may be original or at least earlier than the upper. The sides of the basin taper in towards the bottom and are totally plain, much weathered unless they were re-cut or re-tooled].
