There are two entries for Pinchbeck [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF2325/pinchbeck/] [accessed 15 February 2025], neither of which mentions priest of church in it. Allen (1833) writes: "The font, which is octagonal, is supported by four round pillars." Yet, the state of this octagonal mounted font, of the 15th century in the Perpendicular style, drove Paley (1844) to comment: "It is gaily painted; the small ornaments are a bright green; the mouldings, under the bowl, sky-blue; the bowl and pedestal a bright yellow, and the base a sooty-black: it is lamentable to see such disfigurement". [NB: Paly mentions its pedestal, but not the "four round pillars" noted in Allen [cf. supra]]. Paley (ibid.) described the font as being of good proportions and belonging to the late period of the Perpendicular style because "it is so thickly studded with small ornaments as materially to injure its general effect; and they are introduced in situations where they would not have been when a more pure style prevailed." (ibid.) The fact that it "has lately [i.e., ca. 1844] had a new tap fixed to let off the water outside instead of a drain" (ibid.) could not have endeared it to Paley either. Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Font. Prettily decorated Perp[endicular] stem (cf. Surfleet)." The font-cover is noted and illustrated in Howard & Crossley (1919). The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF2419925595] reports: "Parish church. C12. C13, C14, C15, 1855, chancel rebuilt by Butterfield 1861 [...] C14 octagonal font with quatrefoil panels containing shields and crosses to the sides of the bowl and buttressed stem with quatrefoils and fleurons."
