There are four entries for [Bag] Enderby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF3472/bag-enderby/] [accessed 30 September 2018], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Betjeman (1958): "The font has carvings of a Pietà and emblems of the Passion." Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with representations of the Pietà, a seated figure with a lute, a hart licking the leaves of a tree from its back, a shield with the Instruments of the Passion, etc. The font base stands on a plinth made from a quite elaborate incised slab." Described in Jenkins (1999) as a "Perpendicular font, worth crossing Lincolnshire to see. The carvings on the octagonal bowl include a moving Pietà, a hart licking the bark of a tree sprouting from its back, and what looks like a saint playing a banjo." The entry rfor this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF3492272049] notes: "C15 octagonal ashlar font, the decoration to the sides of the bowl include shields, a figure and lute, a quatrefoil in circle, a hart licking leaves of the Tree of Live and St. Mary with dead child. Font set into the remnants of incised C15 floor slabs." [NB: the little trees at the bottom of some of the basin panels resemble those on the font at Belchford].
