The church was built over an older church, ancient Saxon pillars were exposed during repairs in 1985. There is an entry for this Burwell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TF3579/burwell/] [accessed 20 July 2016]; it mentions a church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period here. The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: TF3557279697] (1967) reports a "C15 octagonal font with shields contained in cusped panels, traceried pedestal and plinth with inscription saying it was the gift of Thomas Fitzwilliam."
