view of church exterior - south view

Scene Description: Source caption: "All Saints' church, Maltby le Marsh, Lincs. A splendid medieval church in a very sorry state of disrepair ! A wide nave c1300 with classic Y tracery windows, a short chancel and Perpendicular tower. Now redundant, without its fittings and permanently closed due to safety issues. A shameless fate for a wonderful church."

Font Notes:
There are four entries for Maltby [-le-Marsh] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF4681/maltby-le-marsh/] [accessed 15 November 2018], one of which reports a church in it. Paley (1844) points out that "the singularity of this font is very remarkable; the basin almost covered by four angels with expanded wings, having books in their hands, the spaces between the wings being filled with trefoils". The base is a square pillar with trimmed corners, each of which is occupied by an Apostle, two of them identified by Paley as St. Paul and St. Andrew by their symbols (ibid.) The sides of the pillar, between the figures, have vertical rows of four-leaf rosettes. The plinth has two square steps and an attached semi-circular priest's stone. Cox & Harvey (1907) list it simply as a noteworthy example. Betjeman (1958) describes it as a "beautiful 14th-century font with carved figures of angels holding open books, at its angles". Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Octagonal. Perp[endicular]. Against the stem, at the angles, four men with excessively standing-out hair (cf. the four formerly at Covenham St Bartholomew [...]). Against the bowl four angels with spread wings." [NB: not clear whether the font is still in this church at this time [November 2018] or it was removed after the church became redundant]
