There are five entries for Witham [on the Hill] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TF0516/witham-on-the-hill/] [accessed 29 January 2018], one of which, lorded in 1066 by Ulf (Fenman), and by Berewold; Gilbert of Ghent in 1086, reports a church in it. Paley (1844) mentions a baptismal font of low cylindrical shape decorated with sculpture here. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Transitional period. [NB: we have not been able to locate this font inside the church; cf. Index entry for Witham-on-the-Hill No. 2 for the 17th-century font in use in this church].
