No entry found for Fosdyke in the Domesday survey. Simpson (1828) writes: "The base of this Font is concealed by the floor of the pew in which it stands; it is, as well as the very handsome cover over it, in a good state of preservation: We presume the sculpture in the centre panel of the Font to be intended for a representation of St. Michael and the great dragon." Allen (1833) describes the octagonal font as "beautifully carved" and mentions "a pyramidal cover of handsome fret work". Moule (1837) describes it as "ancient and very curious". The cover alone is illustrated in Gailhabaud (1850) as a gracious pyramid executed in the taste of the 15th century; of the font itself, Gailhabaud (ibid.) says that it is not very interesting [="n'offre que peu d'intérêt"]. The font is listed in Cox-Harvey (1907) simply as a noteworthy example of the Perpendicular style. Bond (1908) does not mention the font, but describes the tall cover as one of several "fine examples of Gothic font covers". Noted with a caveat in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "If this is Perp[endicular], the panels of the bowl anyway are completely re-cut. The underside and the stem are more convincing. -- Font cover. Tall, Perp[endicular]." The font is octagonal all over; the basin has large an angel figure deeply carved on each (?) of the side panels, the one at the centre of Simpson's illustration appears indeed to be St. Michael standing over a dragon; the columns at the angles are topped with crocketed spires; there is a crouching figure or animal at each of the angles of the recessed chamfer of the underbowl; there is a blind arcade of crocketted arches or windows on the sides of the stem of the base; they appear deeply set, an effect emphasised by the protruding buttresses at the angles; the carving as pointed out in Pevsner et al., suspiciously modern; the inner basin well is round.
