Font Notes:
There are two entries for Aswarby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF0639/aswarby/] [accessed 25 September 2018], one of which reports "1.7 church" in it. Described and illustrated in Simpson (1828) as a late-Norman baptismal font, "a specimen of what may be called transition work, the capitals Norman, so far as relates to the Abacus, but otherwise inclined to the Early English style, and the bases more decidedly so." Simpson (ibid.) notes that part of the font appears to hang over the plinth on one side, but that it is not known why or when it happen to be so placed. Simpson (ibid.) gives the font at nearby Aunsby as similar and of the same period. Moule (1837) dates to the reign of Henry III [i.e., 1216-1272]. In Sutton (1904) as "almost Early English". Cox-Harvey (1907) describe it as a circular font with constructional shafts. Bond (1908) describes it simply as a circular mounted font. Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Transitional. Circular with four corner shafts. They have ribbed leaf capitals and these, in a very unusual way, send out horns or spurs to clasp the round bowl." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF0672039906] notes: "Parish church, C12, C14, C15, Chancel 1849 by H.E. Kendall, restored 1850 by Edward Blore [...] Late C12 round tub font with 4 engaged round shafts having stylised acanthus capitals, C20 carved wooden lid."
