There are three entries for [South] Ormasby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF3775/south-ormsby/] [accessed 7 January 2019] none of which report a church in it; one, however, was in the shared lordship of Almer and Ernwin the priest in 1066. Cox & Harvey (1907) describe the South Ormsby as bearing an inscription on the base with "the names of the donors Rudolph Bolle and his wife". Described in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicualr], very lavishly carved. Panelled stem, angels against the underside of the bowl, shields on the bowl with the symbols of the Annunciation, the Instruments of the Passion, the M for Mary, the IHS, and the arms [...] One of the shields is inscribed with a great rarity, a Middle English inscription: 'In God is al godnes' it reads [...] All these shields are held by angels with hair standing out from their heads. The inscription at the foot refers to the donation of the font by Rudulphus Bolle and his wife.." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF3694175149] notes: "Parish church. C12, c.1200, c.1384, chancel C15, restoration of 1871-2 by James Fowler. [...] In the west wall is a doorway comprising a re-used mid C12 round arched head with billet moulded hood, said to come from Calceby [...] Fittings are all C19 apart from the fine font with panelled octagonal traceried stem, the bowl has angel supporters and on the sides are shields with Symbols of the Passion, and the Virgin Mary set in cusped roundels." Described and illustrated in Allan Barton [http://medieval-church-art.blogspot.com/2008/12/in-god-is-al-godnes-inscribed-font.html] [accessed 29 December 2009]: "The base of the font is inscribed with a patronal inscription, recording that it was given to the church by Ralph Bolle and his wife. The inscription reads 'Orate pro animabus Radulphi Bolle ... uxoris eius qui fieri fecerunt hoc baptisterium' . 'Pray for the soul of Ralph Bolle [and ? ] his wife who made this baptistry'. It is curious this use of the word 'baptisterium' rather than 'fons' in this context, I've not come across that before. The part of the inscription that records the name of Ralph's wife is sadly missing, and as a consequence we don't really know who Ralph Bolle is [...] He was probably a member of the family of the same name from Swineshead, who inherited the neighbouring manor of Haugh in the middle of the fifteenth century [...] The bowl of the font is [...] decorated with figures of angels holding shields, Two are heraldic (and may provide evidence of patronage [...]), others are charged with the sacred monogram 'IHS', the monogram of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven 'MR', the instruments of the Passion and the mongram of the Annunciation, i.e. a lily pot between the letters A and M." The wooden cover is octagonal and flat. There are several areas of damage to the font: at the upper rim, above the shield with the inscription is a new-stone insert which must have repaired an area affected by the old cover staples; the foot of the stem is badly cracked and poorly fixed with cement.
