There are two entries for Somersall [variant spelling in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK1335/somersal/] [accessed 1 July 2016], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) report a noteworthy example of Norman tub font with characteristic ornamentation here [NB: C&H use "Sommershall Herbert" in one entry (p. 194) and "Somersal Herbert" in another (p. 195); the current usage form is the latter]. The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: SK1361035158] (1967) notes: " Early C12 circular tub font with intersecting blind arcading and a frieze of lozenges overlaid with intermittent circles." The tub-shaped basin is almost cylindrical and very weathered; there is a band of crude interlace that includes zig-zag lines as well as circles just below the upper rim; the sides are covered in an arcade of round intersecting arches resting on columns with capitals and bases; the inner well of the basin is lead-lined. The old basin has been re-set on a modern octagonal base and plinth.
