Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Decorated period. Noted in Cox (1913): "The large octagonal font is also 14th cent.; it was cast out in 1814 and used for farm purposes, but was replaced in the church about the time of the considerable restoration of the fabric in 1874." The Antipope website [http://www.antipope.org/feorag/wells/hope/cumberland.html] [accessed 31 January 2010] quotes Rev. J. Wilson, in Penrith Observer: "The font, which is a neat specimen of Early English style, bears St. Catharine's wheel."
