Font Notes:
Butterworth (1841) reports simply "an interesting font" in this church. Wilson's Gazetteer (1870-1872) reports an old font at St. Bartholomew's. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy example of 15th century font; has symbols of the Passion. Described in Pevsner (1969) and in Hartwell & Pevsner (2009) as a gift of Lawrence Towneley [aka Townley] in 1590, "but oviously early C16. Concave-sided-octagonal, with shields and Instruments of the Passion." [NB: the later edition corrrects Pevsner's earlier errors of description]. Illustrated in the Lancashire Churches web site [www.lancashirechurches.co.uk]: "The early C16 font was the gift of Lawrence Townley of Barnside in 1590. It has an octagonal bowl decorated with shields wich show the Townley coat of arms, the instruments of the passion, IHS, and Townley's initials. It stands on a multi-columned pier. The font bears a close resemblance to that at St Peter and St Paul's, Bolton-by-Bowland." A fine octagonal baptismal font of the late 15th or early 16th century in the chantry chapel of St. Bartholomew founded by Laurence de Towneley/ Townley; it bears the coat of arms of the Towneleys/Townleys, "three mullets and a fesse" [source: www.burnley.gov.uk/towneley].
