Noted in 'On the ancient stone fonts of Cornwall' (1851): "The bowl, which is circular, and ornamented with shields, angels bearing shields, &c. rests on a clustered shaft, moulded like the pillars of the arcades in many of the later Cornish churches". Described in Blight (1863): "The general form of the font resembles that at St. Burian, having a pedestal consisting of three-quarter rounds at the angles, with a cavetto between each. At one angle of the bowl is an angel; the others have shields curiously sculptured." Noted and illustrated in Geldart (1899) who mentions three fish next to a cross on one of the shields. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Described in Polsue (1867-): "The font is of granite, it consists of a round bowl, supported on a moulded shaft. On the bowl are sculptured four shields of arms, one of which displays Kymyel impaling St. Aubyn. About the year 1842, the font stood in front of the communion table" [source: Joseph Polsue's A Complete Parochial History of the County of Cornwall (London: William Lake, Truro & John Camden Hotten, 1867-1872 - cited in west-penwith.org.uk/gulval1.htm)]. Noted in Cox (1912) as one of three early-14th century fonts (St. Buryan, Gulval and Sancreed) made of granite from Ludgvan parish; Cox (ibid.) adds details much as in Polsue above. Noted in Pevsner (1970): "The Font also is of St Yves type but with only one severely stilized angel holding a shield."
