Font Notes:
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) and in Cox (1912) as a baptismal font of the Decorated period; Cox (ibid.) gives the date as 15th-century in the same source. Illustrated in http://www.caerkief.co.uk/Churches/John.html [accessed 12 November 2009]. The font consists of a smallish octagonal basin with plain vertical sides and chamfered at both ends, raised on a plain octagonal stem and a moulded lower base. The font appears to have been drastically re-cut or re-tooled; the whole base (font?) may be a modern replacement introduced in the restoration of 1868. The wooden cover is octagonal, flat and plain, with a ring handle; modern. The entry for this church in St-John-in-Cornwall [https://stjohnincornwall.org.uk/st-john-church/] [accessed 15 February 2025] notes: "The Font is located straight in front of the entrance by the north wall. It has been tentatively dated to the 15th century. It is octagonal; the bowl is of Pentewan stone, and rests on a Bath stone shaft."
