Century and Period: 14th - 16th century, Perpendicular
Church Notes: the present church is modern but includes a 12thC Norman doorway built into the north wall;
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907: 189) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SJ7676452378] reports: "An entrance porch, on north side of nave, still has the original stone holy water font" [i.e., stoup?], but mentions no baptismal font in it; the 'original' stoup, built into the wall of the porch, to the left of the door has a trefoiled frame, therefore unlikely that it was of the same period as the Norman doorway. The present font in use in this church consists of an octagonal basin with a rounded underbowl, raised on a short stem and a slightly wider base, all octagonal, all plain; the font appears to have been drastically re-tooled. The wooden cover, a flat and plain octagon with a raised finial-handle, is modern.
