Font Notes:
There is an entry for Downham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL5284/downham/] [accessed 13 April 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Decorated period here. Noted in Pevsner (1970): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with blank arches against the stem and the coving below the bowl and quatrefoils with rosettes on the sides of the bowl." The Victoria County History (Cambridge..., vol. 4, 2002) notes: "The fabric dates from the end of the 12th century with later additions and alterations. [...] The font is of the 15th century with octagonal bowl and shaft, all richly panelled with quatrefoils and shallow trefoiled niches". Described in the Cambridgeshire Churches web site [www.druidic.org/camchurch]: "The font is quite a pleasant octagonal affair with panelling on all the faces. The stem has small blind arches, and the bowl itself is decorated with quatrefoils." [NB: the latter source and several others have the location as "Little Downham"]
