Font Notes:
There are seven entries for this Croydon [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL3149/croydon/] [accessed 17 March 2016], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Norman period here. Described in the RCHM (Cambridgeshire, 1968): "rectangular limestone bowl with double rolls at the angles and plain bands at top and bottom; 12th-century; the bowl, which stands on a modern base, is fractured and has been filled to take a later lead ling." Noted in Pevsner (1970): "Font. Norman, square and plain, with angle shafts to the bowl." The Victoria County History (Cambridge and the Isle of Ely, vol. 8, 1982) notes: "The church at Clopton had been established by the late 12th century [...] The font has a 12th-century limestone bowl." Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2016): "The font has a square bowl on a modern cuboid block which acts as a plinth. Each corner of the bowl is carved with a vertical double roll. There are major repairs to cracks on the E and N faces, while the inside of the basin has been drastically reduced in size with mortar and a new lead lining fitted. This has been very roughly done, and pieces of the old lining project through the mortar."
