Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Horton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ0175/horton/] [accessed 12 November 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. In his entry for the Church of St. Michael, in Horton, Parker (1850) notes: "The font is plain N[orman], tub-shaped." [Parker (ibid.) puts this Horton in the Deanery of Burnham, in the area just southwest of Leighton Buzzard]. In Sheahan (1862), after Parker. A font in the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, Horton, just south of Colnbrook, north of Wraysbury, is described in Gill (1862): "The font, which is probably coeval with the building [i.e., 12th-century, Norman], has been removed from its former situation and is placed at the west end of the nave. It is very large, plain, and cylindrical, and stands on a circular basement, having its basin lined with lead". A Norman font is listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) at Horton, in Buckinghamshire. The Victoria County History (Bucks., vol. 3, 1925) notes: "The advowson of Horton Church, mentioned in 1198, was appurtenant to the manor [...] The nave dates from about the middle of the 12th century; a south aisle was added about the end of the same century, but only the arcade opening to it now survives, the aisle having been rebuilt in 1875–6. [...] The font has a 12th-century circular bowl, with a cable moulding round the top; the lower part has apparently been retooled and the base is modern." In his guide to Buckinghamshire Pevsner (1960) notes: "Font. Norman, tub-shaped. At the top, band of twisted rope." Described in the Parish web site [http://www.stmichaels-horton.org/horton/horton-history-building.php]: "The font is 12th century, with a simple rope moulding. It is a large tub (1 metre across) and big enough for a baby to be totally immersed."
