Font Notes:
There are two entries for Felmersham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP9957/felmersham/] [accessed 11 September 2015], neither of which mentons cleric or church in it. Rickman (1835) notes that this church "contains some of the best Early English work in the county ", but does not mention the font. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The church of St. Mary the Virgin [...] begun about 1220, and carried through to completion in some twenty years [...] The font near the south doorway is an octagonal block with trefoiled panels, and an 18th-century domed cover with a hinged door on the west side." The VCH entry (ibid.) notes also: "East of the south doorway is a recess for holy water." The font may have been restored or altered ca. 1919, for a "Plan for alterations to the font at Felmersham Church by J.P. White & Sons Ltd, the Pyghtle Works, Bedford P93/2/2/12 18 August 1919" is listed in the parish records in the National Archives [www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=004-p93&cid=2-2-10#2-2-10] [accessed 13 September 2011]. The Feldersham.net site [www.felmersham.net/churchfurnishings.htm] [accdessed 13 September 2011] illustrates the font with the following note: "Font, possible date, 1220/1240. The top of the font was raised with a course of stone and the blind tracery added in 1895. Wooden Cover - restored by Fred Turner".
