Church Notes: [NB: access to churches in Burgos and Palencia: there is no 'standard' approach which can be applied with any likely measure of success in the access to the churches of these areas. Many of the temples are locked all the time and keyholder behaviour is erratic; they can be highly suspicious of visitors, especially of those who may appear to have a 'professional' or academic interest in the temple and its contents. Some of the priests, often serving anywhere from six to twelve parishes, are often not inclined to go out of their way -or, in a few cases, bother at all- to provide access to the temple outside cult hours; needless to say, and understandably so, they do not welcome visitors during cult hours either. Others, priests and researchers alike, have a highly territorial approach and regard these churches and their contents as their own private projects, therefore looking upon outsiders as intruders, regardless of the latter's credentials. That said, however, it must be added that one will also find in these areas the warmest, kindest, most helpful, hospitable and knowledgeable people anywhere. To these, our respect and most sincere gratitude!]
Church Address: Calle Iglesia, 1, 34127 Miñanes, Palencia, Spain
Site Location: Palencia, Castilla y León, Spain, Europe
Directions to Site: Located off the P242, just S of Bahíllo, 20 km WWN of Osorno
Additional Comments: Visited the village but priest was away and the key-holder would not let us see it without the priest present [most priests in the area look after 8-12 parishes and tend to be present only for the services. Visit it again.
Font Notes:
Described in Martín González (1977-1980). Described and illustrated in Bilbao (1996) and García Guinea (1998): baptismal font of the Romanesque period; G-G (ibid.) dates to the 12th or 13th century; the bucket-shaped basin is ornamented with many representations of animals: eagles, doves, fox, griffin, quadrupeds, centaur, all of them done with great sense of movement and making up several scenes; between the animals appear, within their own arches, a bishop and a a seated figure -possibly a monk- as well as a lion armed with shield and sword attacking a serpent. The lower base is plain. García Guinea (ibid.) compares the pleats of the robes to those on the Apostles at Moarves [cf. Index entry for Moarves de Ojeda]. Noted and illustrated in Martín Jiménez (2008)
