The church of St Nicholas, which dates from the 13th century, occupies a striking location overlooking the ancient Harrold Bridge and Causeway, as well as the River Great Ouse and Harrold Country Park. The church was made redundant in the 1970s but has since been turned into a well appointed residential centre for young people." There is an entry for Chellington in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP9555/chellington/] [accessed 11 September 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Kelly's Directory for Bedforshire (1898) reports: "the font, Early English, is a cylindrical basin on circular shafts" [transcription in www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/BDF/Chellington/ [accessed 11 September 2015]]. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Early English period in this church [NB: C&H have "Challington"]. The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The first mention that has been found of Chellington Church is in 1278–9, when it was attached to the manor and endowed with one messuage, a croft and 3 roods of land. [...] No part of the church seems older than the 13th century, the chancel and both aisles of the nave dating from c. 1250. [...] In the south aisle there is a late 13th-century circular font on a square stem, with chamfered angles and four detached shafts with moulded capitals and bases."
