No entry for this Carlton found in the Domesday survey. Kelly's Directory of Bedfordshire for 1898 reports: "the font is Transitional, with rude interlaced carving and cable moulding round the basin, and is supported on tall circular columns" [transcription in www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/BDF/Carlton/ [accessed 11 September 2015]. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a noteworthy baptismal font of the Norman period in this church. Pevsner (1968) states that the font underwent alterations from its original tub shape in the 13th century. The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "Carlton Church is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey, and the first reference has been found in 1206 [...] The font stands under the east arch of the tower, and has a round bowl of c. 1130, ornamented with an arcade of round-headed arches, on which are fleurs de lis and heads; it has been altered in the 14th century to fit a stem of six engaged shafts. The stem is now covered with plaster." Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2015): "Tub-shaped orginally, but altered in the 13thc. (Pevsner) or 14thc. (VCH) to create a sexfoil at the base of the bowl, which now has clustered pillars beneath. The lead lined font is carved in shallow relief with a range of motifs." The CRSBI (ibid.) further notes that "The Carlton Church guide notes that the font was damaged 'during Cromwell's time'".
