Gough (1792) writes: "On the pedestal of the font in the beautiful church at Kirkton [sic], in Lincolnshire is this inscription: 'Orate pro a'i'a Alani Burton qui fontem istam fieri fec. A.D. MCCCV" [?]. Allen (1833) describes the font as octagonal and handsome, and gives a transcription of the inscrption slightly different from Gough's: "Orate pro aia Alauni Burton qui fontem istum fieri fec A.D. MCCCV", Mentioned in Paley (1844) as a baptismal font of 1405 bearing an inscription [NB: Paley misspells the name as "Kiston"]. Listed in Romilly Allen (1888), after Paley. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the mid-14th century with an inscription around the base [cf. Inscription area] dating it precisely to 1355 and giving the name of the donor, Alaric Burton. [NB: oddly enough the font at Kirton is listed in Cox & Harvey's chapter on inscrbed fonts but not in the [supposedly] inclusive county listing]. Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Octagonal, given in 1405 (see the re-cut Orate inscription). Simple panels with shields." A lithograph showing an architectural study of the font at Kirton, done by Stephen Lewin was advertised in 'LINCS to the past' [Reference Name LCNUG : 1981/37 (69a)] [www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayStandard.aspx?oid=469714] [accessed 7 January 2013]. The CRSBI (2008) dates part of the church to the 12th century, but we have no information on the original font there.
