Font Notes:
Parker (1855) notes: "There is a beautiful P[erpendicular] font, with an inscription on the steps". [NB: Parker (ibid.) mentions another inscription on the flint-work of the parapets of the church: "John Hoo and Katheryn hys wyffe"]. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907): "The handsome font at Hessett, Suffolk, has a 'kneeling stone' to the west of the plinth. Upon the three sides is the following inscription: 'Orate pro animabs rti hoo et augnetis uxis ejus q istum fontem fieri fecerunt'. The will of Robert Hoo was proved in 1510; in it mentions 'myn wyf Augnes'". In Long (1923), with "an inscription round the top". Mentioned in James (1930). Listed in Cautley (1982) as 15th-century font bearing an inscription. Noted and illustrated in Knott (2008). The octagonal font is covered in tracery and other decorative motifs; the inscription is on the side of the kneeling stone of the octagonal plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal, flat and plain.
