There is an entry for Compton [Martin] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/ST5457/compton-martin/] [accessed 28 February 2015], but it mentions neither cleric not church in it. A font in this church is noted in Kelly's Directory of 1883: "the font is Norman". Wade & Wade (1929) report a "Norm[an] font on a fluted pedestal". Described in Pevsner (1958): "Norman, circular, with a chip-carved zigzaf frieze." Noted in Betjeman (1980). The baptismal font, as seen now [February 2008], consists of a roughly hemispherical basin, plain but for a band of raised zigzag under the upper rim. It is raised on a cylindrical pedestal base, modern, but much in the style of what one would expect the original to look like [NB: the fluted pedestal reported in Wade & Wade above must have been relaced by the present one]. The wooden cover has eight scroll ribs around a central pivot on a flat octagonal platform, in the Jacobean style (but probably Victorian).
