No entry found for Chelmorton in the Domesday survey. Cox (1875-1877) notes: "The octagon font, now placed at the west end of the church near the tower archway, is a remarkable example of late Perpendicular. Its height including the base, is four feet three inches, and its diameter across the top is two feet." Cox (ibid.) goes on to pint out the what makes the font remarkable is not its proportions, "but for the inscription or sculpture, consisting of separate letters or designs on each of its eight faces. This inscription has ffor a long time puzzled the most astute antiquaries, owing to the sculptor having carved a Greek invocation in Old English letters. The first of these characters we take to be an initial cross, followed by the letters s, eb, s, e, m, n, o, that is σεβ σεμυω, or 'Reverence the Reverend One'." The inscription on this font is written at length in Greaves (1879) with an illustration [cf. ImagesArea]. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as an octogonal 15th-century baptismal font which bears a small letter or design on each face; these have been interpreted as symbols, acronyms, etc., to no-one's satisfaction so far; a noteworthy example of the Perpendicular period. Noted in Pevsner (1978): "Font Octagonal, Perp[endicular]." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SK1155570262] notes: "Church. C13, C14, restored 1869 [...] Octagonal Perp font with moulded base, and cusped decorated panels over."
