Scene Description: Source caption: "The frieze on the Esstern end of the Abbey Church is delicately carved at the end, but nowhere else. This probably reflects the re-use of stone from the old abbey buildings during later rebuilding."

Scene Description: Source caption: "The parish church of St Peter and St Paul at Bourne is better known as the Abbey Church [...] The font can be found in a prominent position at the west end of the church and a close look reveals that it was both painted and gilded at some time in the past."

There are six entries for this Bourne [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF0920/bourne/] [accessed 5 August 2019] two of which report "0.5 churches" in each. Simpson (1828) writes: "This Font is very plain, but the design as a plain one is good" and gives the text of the inscription [cf. Inscription area], the mostly abbreviated words of which spread over seven of the eight sides of the basin (the eighth is blank, probably meant to go against a wall or to be painted). Described and illustrated in Paley (1844): octagonal mounted font in the Perpendicular style. There is a row of four-leaf flowers of the type known as the "Tudor flower" around the upper border of the basin; the sides of the basin are panelled, one blank, the other seven contain portions of an inscription in large black lettering [cf. inscription]. Paley (ibid.) states that "It has lately been patched up with Roman cement, and sanded, to look like stone; the ancient details appear, however, to have been preserved." Bloxam (1859) provides the text of the transcription. Bond (1908) notes a "black-letter inscription" on this font [cf. Inscription area for text]. The inscription is also reported in Cox & Harvey (1907). Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with the inscription: Jesus est nomen quod est super omne nomen. The inscription is spread over the eight fields."
