Described in Paley (1844): a fine octagonal mounted font of the 15th century in the Perpendicular style. The basin has the four symbols of the Evangelists alternately with figures of angels in the other four. The chamfered underbowl has an angel with extended wings at each angle. The elegant stem of the base has a trefoil arch on each of its eight sides. "It is elevated on three unusually high steps; the two lower ones are octagonal, and the upper one is in the form of a cross." Paley (ibid.) dates it firmly in the 15th century based on style but "further confirmed by the shield on the front step being charged with the Rose en Soleil, the Yorkist badge, assumed by Edward the Fourth after the battle of Mortimer's Cross, (A.D. 1461) and afterwards continued by the Tudors." (ibid.) Parker (1855) describes it as "very fine; the bowl and pedestal richly panelled". Bloxam (1859) appears to list it among the Norman fonts. Bond (1908) appears to have used much of Paley's information as a source; he describes this font as one of "the most magnificent examples which we possess". James (1930) writes: "The font has the Evangelistic emblems and intermediate figures which demand interpretation. The base and steps are stately." Listed in Cautley (1982) as a heraldic font of the 15th century. Knott (2008) notes: "The font is curious, to say the least. Four of the panels show conventional evangelistic symbols, but three of the other four are unfamiliar. One is an angel, but the others are a woman in a cowl carrying a scroll beside a tree, a man with a sack pointing to a book open on a shelf, and a man with a scroll at a lectern."
