There is an entry for Priston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/ST6960/priston/] [accessed 6 November 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Lewis (1876) mentions the "mark of the fetterlock" on the font at Priston and writes: "The octagonal font of Perpendicular date was the gift of a member of the Long family, and it bears six shields which are interesting in their bearing upon the heraldic puzzle which the tomb in the church of S. James, South Wraxall, presents. On each of the faces of this font is a shield. On one of there is the letter W and on another the four letters of the word Long are arranged. On the other shields are the arms of the monastery of Bath -- the keys and the sword crossed, the badge of the Longs -- the fetterlock, and several coats including the lion rampant and the crosses paté, or whatever they are, about whose interpretation there is dispute." Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a heraldic font of the Perpendicular period that "bears on two of the bowl panels 'W. Long'; the arms of Long also appear on the font, of which he was clearly the donor." Described in Pevsner (1958): "Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with arms and emblems." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: ST6929160424] notes: "Parish Church. C12 origins, probable C14 phase, tower rebuilt 1750s, major restoration, largely neo-Norman 1861 [...] octagonal, Perpendicular font, cusped panels to shafts, heraldry above". [NB: the fabric of the church goes back to Norman times, but we have no information on the earlier font(s)]
